FAQ

Q: What is Key Club? Do you make keys?

A: Key Club is the oldest and the largest nonprofit student-led organization for high schoolers, which is also sponsored by Kiwanis International. We serve our home, school, and community through community service and work to spread the importance of leadership and to influence others. And no, we don't make keys, but service is key!

Q: Why should I join Key Club?

A: Joining Key Club would enable you to do services, discover leadership opportunities, and have access to scholarships. You are not limited to leadership positions within Gabrielino too! Because Key Club is an international organization, you will be able to gain leadership possibilities outside your school, city, or even state!

Q: Where is the Key Club room?

A: The Key Club room is in B135 (Ms. Mao). Every day there is an officer to help members in the room during lunch, so if you have any inquiries about Key Club; we'd love to help you! (With school being closed, members can contact any officer through email or on Instagram. Find the contacts on the contact page.)

Q: What are the requirements of Key Club?

A: Each member is required to complete at least 15 hours and earn 5 function points by the end of the year to be considered an active member. By completing your hours and function points at the end of the year, you will be able to attend our annual end-of-the-year banquet for free! Members are also required to do at least one service to be able to attend Fall Rally.

Q: How does NHS (National Honors Society) work through Key Club?

A: Gabrielino has an official NHS form that you can turn in as proof that you've completed your required hours. There's a column where you need an "event coordinator's signature," but Key Club members get hours through the club. Because of this, we have organized it so that hours earned through Key Club can go into NHS. Key Club has our own special NHS form (you can find this in our documents tab) that you can fill out and our secretary, Jaron Lin, will sign off to verify. Afterwards, you can tale this NHS Key Club form to one of our advisors, Mrs. Gonzalez or Ms. Mao, and they will sign it off as "event coordinator." Finally, you will take this form to your counselor! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us or any one of our officers!

Q: What happens if members don't finish their hours?

A: All members are encouraged to finish their hours by the end of the 2nd semester of school. If members do not serve their complete 15 hours, then they are considered an inactive member and will not receive their hour completion certificate, which is given at our annual banquet. We will not kick you out of the club, but we strongly recommend that all members serve at least 15 hours of service!

Q: How do I sign up for a service?

A: By clicking the "Service & Events" tab in the menu, it will take you to all the future services and events we have planned. Each service and event will have its own details along with a link to sign up near the bottom of all the details of that particular service or event. Click on it, and you will be directed to a Google Form that you must fill out in order to be signed up for a service. To make sure you have signed up, go to the "Member Resources" tab and click "Sign Up List". There, you can see all the people who have signed up for future services. It may take a while for the list to update, so please wait before trying to submit another form response.

Q: Why is my name in red on the Sign Up List Spreadsheet although I am above the waitlist?

A: As long as your name is above the waitlist word in red, you're all good so don't worry about it! Due to the fact that are spreadsheet has been very old and been in used year after year, the system within the program itself glitches a little here and there and we are still on the search to fix this problem. As of right now, your name in red means nothing, you are not in trouble! Just be on the lookout if your name is above or below the word waitlist for your reference to attend services.

Q: How can I cancel a service?

A: Located under the "Services & Events" tab in the menu as a sub-page is the Cancellation Form. Please fill it out at least a day before the date of the service. If you don't, then please provide us a member who will be able to attend on your behalf. Not attending a service without cancelling beforehand will result in a member's ban; banned members are not allowed to attend services for 30 days. If you have submitted a cancellation form but still see your name on the list, don't worry, you're name will be taken off shortly, for it is done manually by our tech editor, Megan Chwa. If you have any questions about it, feel free to contact her!

Q: Why did I get moved down to the waitlist?

A: If you receive an email that you have moved down the waitlist, the reason for this because we have implemented our priority system in order to make sure that every member has an equal opportunity to earn their service hours. If you exceed the amount of hours than the majority, there is a possibility that you will be moved down so that those who have not been able to get their hours can attend services. If you have any questions about this, please contact our junior officers, Jayme Banh and Andy Banh

Q: When are meetings?

A: Meetings are generally held on the second Monday of each month during lunch in the small gym unless stated otherwise. All meetings will be announced through e-mail, through the Remind app, on Facebook and stated on the school bulletin (however, not announced over PA).

Q: What is Fall Rally?

A: Every year, Key Clubbers from the Cali-Nev-Ha District go to an event known as Fall Rally to raise money for Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). Here, Key Clubbers show their spirit by cheering for their region and division as they have fun and raise money for a great cause! There are many vlogs on YouTube that accurately document what Fall Rally is like. When you have time, search up some Fall Rally vlogs on YouTube!

Q: Why should I fundraise?

A: Fundraising allows our club to have some extra money to improve the members' club experience with better events, such as District Convention (DCON) and our annual banquet! More importantly, we are able to donate money to the organizations Key Club works with, such as Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) and the ELIMINATE Project. Click on the organization names to find out more about them! In short, fundraising enables us to save more lives by donating to those in need.

Maximum function points earned can be up to 40-50 in which you can cash in for prizes such as pins, stickers, and shirts at the end of the school year.

Q: What are Division Council Meetings ( DCMs)?

A: DCMs are monthly meetings where Key Clubbers from their respected divisions come together and learn about what each school's club did in that month. Our division, Division 10 South, meets every third Sunday from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM at Almansor Park. DCMs are full of fun as well; icebreakers, food, and Key Clubbers from different schools enable us to enjoy ourselves while meeting new people!

Q: Are DCMs required?
